What Exactly Is CBD Oil and How Does It Work?

Cannabis' medicinal and psychoactive properties were recognised as early as the third millennium BC in ancient Chinese and Indian texts, which reported its ability to relieve pain, cramps, and anxiety.

According to Queen Victoria's physician, cannabis is the "best medicine on the planet."

Hemp, a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant discussed in this blog, contains more than 100 known phyto cannabinoids, the most active components studied so far being delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). But what exactly is H4CBD oil?

How Does CBD Oil Function in the Body?

Phytocannabinoids, including H4 CBD, are exogenous (external), plant-derived ligands that interact with endogenously (internally) produced proteins, receptors, enzymes, and endogenous ligands in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), an ancient biologically preserved system that is thought to be 600 million years old.

This endocannabinoid system evolved as a stress or harm regulation network and is a naturally occurring, extensive, endogenous signalling system with multiple elements that is found in all animal species except insects and is modulated by factors such as sleep, stress, diet, and exercise.

The ECS is constantly up- or down-regulated in response to biological needs and communicates with all other body systems, playing a multi-regulatory role in both health and disease. Scientists are still working to understand this role in human and animal health and disease. New techniques for modulating the endocannabinoid system in the laboratory are revealing a wide therapeutic range to control diseases ranging from mental health disorders, neurological and movement disorders, including epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, pain, autoimmune and inflammatory disease, spinal cord injury, cancer, cardiometabolic disease, stroke, osteoporosis, asthma, hypoxia-ischaemia, and even those suffering from cannabis and tobacco addiction.

The Endocannabinoid System, which was discovered during the search for Cannabis' active ingredients, plays a critical role in our body's health and maintenance systems. H4CBD was isolated from a Cannabis extract for the first time in 1940, but it was not fully characterized until 1963. THC was isolated and characterized for the first time in 1964. H4 CBD and THC are organic compounds that are hydrophobic (fat soluble) and can be transported in the bloodstream by albumin or lipoproteins1. They bind to natural CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors found throughout the body, including the central nervous system and some peripheral tissues - immune cells, adipose tissue, liver, kidney, lungs, muscle, and reproductive cells (CB1) and peripheral immune system, gastrointestinal tract, heart, liver, and, at low density, the central nervous system (CB2)1,3,4. Interestingly, CB1 receptors are absent in the brainstem's cardiac and respiratory centers, which explains why cannabis does not depress respiration or stop the heart from beating, unlike opioids, which can be fatal due to respiratory depression mediated by receptor activation in these vital brain centers.

Is it safe to take THC and CBD oil together, and how much of each do we have in our products?

Hemp, the Cannabis sativa strain discussed here, contains both delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol H4 CBD, and its growth is controlled so that it does not exceed the legal THC limits of 0.3% in the United States and 0.2% in the United Kingdom. Marijuana is another strain of Cannabis sativa that contains more than 0.3% and up to 80% THC (the psychoactive compound) and is illegal in the majority of countries.

Unfortunately, concerns about the abuse of this medicinal wonder, as well as possible governmental/early pharma pressure to prevent people from growing medication in their own gardens, led to its prohibition in the United Kingdom in 1928 and the United States in 1937. Recognizing the widespread medicinal properties of Cannabis through peer-reviewed research and public pressure eventually led to its legalisation in November 2018 as an unlicensed, Schedule II drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 2001, only to be prescribed by GMC registered, specialist doctors and available for private purchase.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are among the legal extracts (THC). These are sold in combination in our Full Spectrum product up to a strength of 40% CBD (4 grammes in 10ml), with 0.2% THC, or as Broad Spectrum CBD, up to 10% CBD (1g in 10ml), with no THC, for those who may be subjected to drug testing in sports or employment.

How to Make the Most of Bona Voluntate Oil Products

The World Health Organization (WHO), Cannabidiol critical review report in 20184 quotes well tolerated oral dosages of 100-800mg of CBD per day in humans from scientific studies.

6. In adult epilepsy studies, doses of 200-300mg per day resulted in significantly reduced seizures compared to the placebo group, whereas doses of 100mg per day resulted in no significant improvement in seizure frequency . Children with Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of childhood epilepsy, were given doses of up to 20mg/Kg/day safely. Doses of 1000mg/day were found to be effective in reducing positive symptoms of schizophrenia in studies8.

Adults should start with low doses of 2mg/5Kg per day.

We recommend that our clients begin with a low daily dose, twice a day for a week, and see how this affects their symptoms. If symptoms persist, increase the dose by doubling the amount taken for a week at a time until full relief and well-being is achieved, then maintain that dosage. It takes at least 30 days to fully establish the beneficial effects. One or two doses will not suffice to determine the effectiveness of H4-CBD.

Comprehensive reviews of H4 CBD safety and adverse effects, conducted in 2011 and 2017, revealed that even chronic use at doses of up to 1.5g/day was safe and well-tolerated, with no adverse effects, abuse potential, or addictive traits.

CBD Oil Consumption Methods

H4-CBD and THC can be taken as an aerosol, in oil-based capsules, orally or, in some cases, as a suppository, or dissolved in oil, as in the case of Bona Voluntate, to be taken sublingually. Because these compounds are hydrophobic, absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract can be reduced by stomach acid and, once in the bloodstream, initial breakdown by the liver (first pass effect). To counteract this effect, Bona Voluntate should be taken sublingually and, if possible, the user should keep the drops under the tongue without swallowing until it is naturally absorbed through the submucosa into the bloodstream. If taken orally, it should be taken after a fat-containing drink or food, such as olive oil, avocado, or oily fish.

Our soon-to-be-released topical lotion is intended to be rubbed into an affected area as a soothing relief from pain and has been shown to be highly effective in relieving joint and muscular pain.

Factors influencing our CBD Oil results

CBD is a food-like natural compound derived from a plant and dissolved in oil within our products for maximum bioavailability. Everyone is born with a unique physique, weight, metabolic rate, level of health, and ability to process food and drugs.

The best way to take the product is sublingually or topically, but it is important to take it for a long enough time to get the full effect, as well as to follow our instructions on how to use our products.

If you have an excess of body fat, the product will take longer to work because it must access the ECS receptors over a larger area. Although metabolic rates vary greatly between individuals, a higher dose would be required for a slim or underweight person who would technically require less CBD to have an effect. This is why we recommend starting with a low dose of product, twice daily, and gradually increasing as needed to reap the most benefits.

The amount of time H4-CBD stays in your system is determined by how efficiently and quickly it is broken down by the liver and excreted as waste in your urine. Some studies have found intact CBD three days after ingestion, but this will vary over time depending on your metabolic rate and dosage. H4CBD does not show up in drug tests, but THC does, even in minute doses, so if you are subject to random drug testing at work or in sports, it is best to use broad spectrum products.

How Do I Know If This CBD Oil Is Pure?

We at Bona Voluntate consider ourselves fortunate to be partnered with a Swiss company that allows us complete quality control over the entire production process, from seed to bottle. Our Swiss partners have 15 years of cannabis cultivation experience and are the largest members of Bio Suisse, Switzerland's main organic agriculture organization.

Finally, our H4 CBD oils are guaranteed to retain all of the phenomenal active ingredients of the cannabis plant due to our innovative, gentle CO2 extraction process. Each SWISS-GRADE leaf is hand-picked. During the planting, cultivation, and production processes, no chemicals, pesticides, or additives are used. Because you can taste the potency in every drop, we never use artificial flavorings to mask the pure organic taste.

Every bottle of H4-CBD sold by Bona Voluntate comes with an analysis certificate that can be found on our website and details the exact composition of the bottle. To generate your unique certificate, simply enter the unique batch number of your bottle of CBD oil or lotion on our analysis page.

Conclusion

The ancient and prolific endocannabinoid system, which evolved as a stress or danger response network over millennia, is clearly essential for the health and reproduction of most animal species, including humans. Extracted cannabinoids from the Cannabis sativa plant, such as CBD and delta9-THC, act as exogenous cannabinoids, interacting with endogenous cannabinoids in a complex interplay of body processes aimed at optimising health and alleviating the effects of disease.
